Today we remember the 343 firefighters and thousands of civilians who lost their lives on this day 22 years ago, as well as many who have died of illness related to ground zero. We are also remembering all of the survivors who were affected by this tragedy and will share a survival story.
“On 9/11, Lieutenant Mickey Kross was doing paperwork at the FDNY Engine Company 16 firehouse when his company received the order to dispatch to the World Trade Center. He reported to the North Tower’s 23rd floor.
Upon orders to evacuate, he was descending stairwell B when there was a loud roar. The building was falling. Kross curled his body into a corner of the stairwell.
A few hours later, sheltered by the stairway, Kross, 11 other members of the FDNY, a PAPD officer, and one civilian emerged relatively unscathed into a landscape of twisted steel and rubble.”

Two of our members had the privilege to travel to Newark, NJ this week to honor two fallen firefighters who lost their lives while battling a fire aboard a cargo ship on July 5th. The members who perished were Firefighter Wayne Brooks, Jr and Firefighter Augusto Acabou who had been with the Newark Fire Department for 16.5 years and 9.5 years respectively. Our thoughts are with the men and women of the Newark Fire Department, as well as the family and friends of the fallen firefighters.
Local 1352 has committed to sending members to funeral services whenever there is a multiple line of duty death incident anywhere within the IAFF. We believe that it is very important to be there in person to support our brothers and sisters in these difficult times.
Thank you to Brothers Sequist and Chadwick for attending, as well as the members who stepped up to cover their shifts.

Nice meeting you FFs Sequist and Chadwick. Thanks for making the long trip east!
Engine 334 rescued a kitten this afternoon in the Lea Hill neighborhood! This curious kitten found itself in a precarious position with its head wedged into the hinge of the passenger door of a pickup truck. In addition to the kitten’s head being stuck, it also had the hinge pushing on its neck. The crew evaluated the situation and determined that the best course of action to safely rescue the kitten was to carefully remove the door by unbolting it from the hinges. The door was successfully removed and the kitten was rescued with no obvious injuries. The kitten was placed in a cat carrier and was left in the care of the truck owner who said he was going to at least temporarily name the kitten “Stuckey”. *Photo and information from Valley Regional Fire Authority ... Wonderful news!!
We recently received the unfortunate news that our Brother and friend Bill Mack has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer. Brother Mack was a member of Local 1352 beginning in 1992 when he was hired with the then Auburn Fire Department, until he took a position as a Deputy Chief with East Pierce Fire & Rescue and Rescue in 2021.
Bill had a great impact on our membership, firefighters across the state, and our community during the 29+ years that he was a member of Local 1352 . Brother Mack served as a District Representative for the Washington State Council of Fire Fighters, Vice-President of our Executive Board, and he negotiated several contracts as a member of our Negotiations Team.
Our community was also lucky to have him. In addition to his excellent work on emergency responses, Bill volunteered countless hours of his personal time to various charitable and community outreach programs such as the Nick of Time Foundation.
Brother Mack has given so much to firefighters and the community. This is our chance to give back to him and to show how much we appreciate all that he has done for us. Please consider donating to help the Mack Family with medical expenses, daily needs, and other expenses while Bill takes on this fight. You can see the attached flyer for ways to donate or click the link below.

Please keep Brother Bill Mack and the entire Mack family in your thoughts and prayers during this challenging time.
